Why we hold on to worries

I was once told to leave my worries to the side, for the duration of a yoga class... 'Don’t worry', said the teacher, 'I can guarantee your worries will still be there when you get off the mat!’

I laughed because she was right - I had been scared to let go of what was worrying me. As if my life would unravel if I stopped worrying. I wondered: why do we hold on to worries so much?

😨 Worrying often serves a purpose, it helps us problem solve potential future scenarios so that when they do happen (they often don’t!) we are ready to face them. This what-if thinking is useful when we’re faced with a problem but becomes a problem by itself when we’re brainstorming solutions with no real objective problem at hand.

Every time I start a loop of worry, I remember two things:
🤩 That which you hold, holds you

🤩 “Worry is like a rocking chair: it gives you something to do but never gets you anywhere.” - humorist Erma Bombeck

Happy day to all 🙏🏻
